The Secret - Do you believe?
It is a wonder where inspiration comes from. I was reading “If You Don’t Stop Being Negative” by Matthew Dryden and he reminded me of why I actually read The Secret. This is also the reason I left the United States for Costa Rica.
In a previous post, Why Costa Rica, I explain that I was in a car accident and had to spend way too much time in bed. This was my turning point, I had time to reflect. I asked myself why. Why and I stuck in this bed? Why did I fall asleep and crash my car? I knew I had spent too much of my life working, and for what?
I needed to start living my life instead of living to work.
I was either in the hospital or in bed for the next 3 months. It took a year before I could even do a push-up. I had nothing to do so I read The Secret. I am so glad I did. This book reminded me that I need to be positive. Stop thinking of why did something happen to me. I need to think about how happy I am to be alive, what a blessing this is and not what did I do wrong. Because of my job, I could have a negative attitude, always complaining about the “users” and their “stupid problems”. I never thought that my negative attitude could bring negative events into my life. Better said; I never though a positive attitude could bring positive events into my life.
This is just my opinion
I know there are many people on both sides of the fence with this, and I accept that. I am not trying to sway anyone into following what I believe, but I feel that I should explain how I see The Secret and maybe I can help some people to understand it.
Have you ever stubbed your toe in the morning, right after you wake up? I know you have. Well, what happened next? For most people this is the start to a bad day, and they can not figure out why they are having such a bad day. It starts with the toe and then you drop your toothbrush and then there is a traffic jam, it seems like it will not end. I believe that this is happened because you are releasing negative energy out to the universe.
The universe (law of attraction) only understands negative and positive energy. So if you are laughing, happy or in love; this is positive energy and if you are sending out these emotions, you will receive these back. The same goes for negative energy. If you are angry, sad or in pain; this is negative energy.
So why do I believe?
First, this takes practice. It is not easy to be positive even if there is something negative happening in front of you, but it can be done. After I finished The Secret and had time to think about what it is that I want, I came to the conclusion that I just want to be happy every day, no matter what. I try to not let anything take me down and it has been working.
I made my move to Costa Rica and it was a success. I have actually made more money this year working remotely and less hours than I did last year in a full time job. I have the ability to just go where I want, when I want and be happy the whole time. I thought of all this in bed, injured and now I am living it. I see less negative events now.
Is this a coincidence? Did I fool myself into working harder and I am not noticing it? Or could The Secret be true?
- Hey Matthew, I capitalized the secret (this one un-capitalized just for you) in my post because I think it should be.

Listen Up!
I think it should be capitalized all the time. I’m glad it’s helped people, but I can’t get my mind wrapped around all that damned…positivity. Different strokes for different folks.
Matthew Drydens last blog post..If You Don’t Stop Being Negative…
Hi Jim - As you already know, I’m a huge believer in the Law of Attraction. But as you say, it’s not all that easy to put into practise and I think that’s why so many people give up and become non-believers.
I first read about the Law of Attraction in Think and Grow Rich. At that point in my life, I’d really hit rock bottom. And the Law of Attraction made a huge difference to my life - but it took time.
At the moment I’m finding the activities in Ask and It Is Given to be a huge help. I think the two things a lot of folk struggle with is: Actually believing they’ll be able to have what they want and thinking about the thing in a positive way - eg instead of, I wish I was in a great relationship, they keep saying, I wish my bad relationship would improve.
@Cath = You are right, I knew at least you would understand what I am saying. I have been searching for an analogy that would make sense and I think you just gave it to me;
“Instead of, I wish I was in a great relationship, they keep saying, I wish my bad relationship would improve” Perfectly said.
Hi Jim,
Decided to visit your blog after reading your comment in Mathew’s blog.
I too am a believer in the Law of Attraction. I got into it when I read Steve Pavlina’s posts about it. It got me to working in China. Then traveling to places like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia. It wasn’t till then I got to watch the movie and went on to pass my national board exam without studying but just had positive thoughts about it. You can read about it in this post
And just when I’m looking for a writer’s group, Mathew writes about forming his own. Then I read about your comment. Hmm….
Now I’m trying this experiment to not have a negative thought for 7 straight days. I thought it was going to be easy at first but It’s hard! Yet in the long run, I think it’ll make us have more control of our thoughts and veer our lives to a path full of happiness and simply, “Feel Good.”
Kates last blog post..I’m Floored! Some Happy Writing News
@Kate - It really does seem to happen and when it does, it feels great and you are willing to try even harder. The first day I moved to Costa Rica, the first person I met (a friend of a friend) started talking about the law of attraction. Now we are close friends.
Very nice blog my friend. This works for me to as you know. And who knows maybe we or just you will write a book some day.
Pura Vida
I do believe in being positive. Negative speaking pollutes your thoughts. What I don’t buy is that by believing in getting a parking space up front, and really truly believing you will be a millionaire brings those things to pass.
Positive thinking is healthy, but it’s not a magic bullet.
Jamie Simmermans last blog post..For Sale: Ran Great Yesterday
@Jamie - I think this is why most people disagree with the Secret. People need to understand that you can only be positive or negative and which ever you are is what makes the universe give you that back.
So you may not become a millionaire, but you may very well be extremely happy. And that, to me, is worth a million dollars.
“I never thought that my negative attitude could bring negative events into my life. Better said; I never though a positive attitude could bring positive events into my life.”
I would argue, that a negative attitude is conducive to negative behavior, while a positive attitude breeds positive action. Thus, it’s not the attitude that alters reality, but the actions that proceed the attitude. That’s my opinion.
Further, there’s also the other side. If you take the Secret to its logical conclusion, you can then end up blaming many people for the misfortunes that befall them. Bad things happen to good people. Sometimes it’s merely the result of someones free will being applied to another.
I could go on and on, and like you - I’m not here to convince anyone. Just thought I’d share.
I do agree that “that a negative attitude is conducive to negative behavior, while a positive attitude breeds positive action.” to a certain extent.
There are always going to be bad times, because no one is perfect. I can not train myself to be positive all the time. I really try, but I can not achieve it. So far.
Bad things do happen to good people, but can we say how they were feeling before that happened to them? Were they sad? Or was everything perfect, this we can’t know.
What I do know is that since I have been trying to be positive, more good things have happened to me.
Hi Jim - to be perfectly honest, I was skeptical upon reading The Secret. My mother got me into it, and we had some heated debates about the Law of Attraction. Like Jamie, I think that it’s true to an extent. After all, it’s something that we’ve been taught ever since we were kids - do good things, and it’ll come back. What goes around comes around. It’s wonderful, though, that you’ve observed a positive effect on your life - I’ll admit that I have been noticing a positive effect, too And if there’s anything that’s worth more than a million bucks, it’s happiness.
We have just watched the secret and what a life changing experience. I have always been a positive person and truly believe if you want something enough you will get it. I’m not saying you won;t have to work for it, but it will come to you.
My hubby on the other hand has been a little different UNTIL we watched the secret. So what have I wanted recently - for hubby to be happy, have purpose and hope in his life. Since watching the secret it’s like someone switched a light on for him. You can’t tell me it doesn’t work!
Michele (Happy Girl),
I don’t what it is about the movie and the book, but you said it perfectly; “Since watching the secret it’s like someone switched a light on for him”.
